Telepresent Surveillance was first presented at the Krannert Museum of Art at the University of Illinois, Champaign in January of 1996. Joel Slayton was one of twenty artists selected for the exhibition titled Art as Signal.

Margaret Morse: writes in the catalog essay: :One imagines an intricate web of interactions that interlock different degrees of materiality: the physical setting and the mechanical robots with their sensing devices and computer controls; the surveillance system linking video, radio and computer workstations and displays; and electronic networks that can telematically influence all three levels"
